Employ the Slingshot Effect

The stress that once challenged you works to your considerable advantage, propelling you farther than you could otherwise possibly have gone.  --Stephanie Bogan

One of our clients ended up on the evening news. Concerned that he would appeal to people outside his target market, he called to ask if it was a good idea. I advised that if the worst thing that happened was that the local news station heralded him as a financial expert during troubled times and he had to field a few not-ideal prospect calls, then so be it. I refer to this market opportunity as the "slingshot effect." The markets are pulling back (as are resources and revenue), which creates considerable tension. The greater the tension the more forceful the trajectory when the release occurs—in this case, a recovery in the markets. The stress that once challenged you works to your considerable advantage, propelling you farther than you could otherwise possibly have gone. The laws of physics, it seems, apply in business as well.
