Workshops can be more reputable than seminars when you have a reputable organization sponsoring and marketing the event for you. Bryan D. Beatty, CFP and partner at Egan, Berger and Weiner in Vienna, Virginia, teaches a four-week workshop to adults through his local public school system. “They don’t feel threatened by a sales pitch because the workshop is offered through public education. And we don’t violate the school system’s trust by pitching financial products,” he says. All enrollees finish with a modified financial plan so by default, they get to know and trust Beatty. They also realize how much more information they need to know. “By the time the workshop is done, they’re asking, ‘So how much does it cost to work with you?’” Beatty’s firm also holds bigger workshops for its clients, and asks them to bring friends. Every year, it holds a “Back to School” night, catered and held in a big auditorium. There are financial education workshops, with special guests like an economist, local business writer or demographics researcher coming to speak and make the dry information more interest.
