Schedule Distractions
Set a project timeline that works for you, and you’ll find that distractions will be minimized. --Neil Fiore, Ph.D.
Replace “I don’t have time to play” with “I must take time to play.” Poor self-management is one of the main reasons we let procrastination get the best of us. Ironically, Fiore says our attempts to push aside any desired playtime in order to work diligently may be the very thing causing us to procrastinate to begin with. He suggests adding to your schedule periods of what he calls “guilt-free play,” which can help reduce fantasies of what you’ll be doing once the project is completely finished or about snack breaks, nighttime television schedules or upcoming vacations. It also helps to know your work habits: While some people like to tackle the worst job first; others work best in mornings or grow tense toward the end of the month, when sales quotas or monthly reports are due. Set a project timeline that works for you, and you’ll find that distractions will be minimized.
