'Tis the season of barbecues, beach parties, clambakes, and picnics—and of opportunities for financial advisors to build their business while having a good time. Sure, you could just sit back, eat a couple of burgers, and enjoy the occasion. Or you could try to make the most out of a warm-weather networking opportunities—in a subtle way, of course—while enjoying a sunny summer afternoon. Networking at a pool party, a polo match, a wedding, or the like does require some special skills. "Don’t go to these events with the mindset that you’re going to sell, sell, sell," says business etiquette expert Mary Crane, former assistant chef at the White House during the Clinton years and founder of Mary Crane & Associates, based in Denver. Instead, go with the intent of building a relationship, she suggests.
