Give Presentations to Help Get Your Name Out
To get my name out there, I gave presentations at Texas A&M and wrote a column for the local paper, although I hate writing. -Janet Briaud
I set out to learn how to invest. I read Weisenberger and chose to place our money in a no-load Penn Mutual fund, which ended up on Forbes’ list of top funds. I enrolled in a CFA program and read everything I could get my hands on. In 1986, a friend offered me office space, and I became a fee-only advisor. To get my name out there, I gave presentations at Texas A&M and wrote a column for the local paper, although I hate writing. I joke that it took me four days to write the article and one day to do finance because I had no clients. The real publicity came after I gave a presentation at the 1990 National Association of Personal Financial Advisors conference, got on their board and became the chair. Really, I just kept going at it. It was like when I learned how to play tennis in my 20s. You just get out and hit the ball and you keep working at it. I just had to be outstanding in what I did. Not many people are outstanding. I just worked at it.

Great post! I am just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well - resources like this article are incredibly helpful.
