Don't push clients...pull them

07:30AM Oct 15, 2007 in category Tip of the Day by AdvisorMax

There are two types of marketing: push and pull. I like to pull people to me rather than actively seeking new clients. -Patricia Brennan, a CFP and a planner in West Chester, Pa

Something Brennan doesn't like is the heavy-duty marketing tasks that--again--conventional wisdom says she had to do. "There are two types of marketing: push and pull. I like to pull people to me rather than actively seeking new clients." Her solution was low-pressure seminars. "My feeling was, if you're interested, you'd come and follow up with free consultation. I don't do much direct marketing, at least not anymore. At this point, most of my new business comes from existing clients and their referrals."

-Patricia Brennan, a CFP and a planner in West Chester, Pa., in Non-Business Development
